about São Tomé and Príncipe

Located in the Gulf of Guinea in Central Africa, the country consists of two main islands: São Tomé and Príncipe. The capital city is São Tomé. The name “São Tomé” means Saint Thomas in Portuguese, while “Príncipe” means Prince, referring to Prince Afonso, son of King John II of the Avis dynasty.
In English, the country is sometimes referred to as “Saint Thomas and Prince”, and this version is occasionally used in English-speaking regions.

about Culture

The official languages are Portuguese, Forro (a Portuguese-based Creole), Angolar Creole, and Principense Creole. São Tomé and Príncipe is a full member of both the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and La Francophonie. According to 2016 statistics, Christianity—predominantly Roman Catholicism due to Portuguese influence—accounts for the majority of religious affiliation. The second-largest group consists of people with no religious affiliation.

about Economy

São Tomé and Príncipe was the first country in Africa to cultivate cocoa, and its economy remains largely dependent on primary industries such as the export of cocoa and copra.
Although still a relatively poor agricultural nation, it is not classified among the world’s least developed countries. The nation has experienced strong economic growth, reaching a per-capita GDP of USD 3,167 in 2024, which is considered fairly respectable by African standards.

The country is currently exploring potential offshore oil reserves, and its tourism industry is gradually being developed.
